Smart housing could help reduce environmental impact of rapidly urbanising Africa

Hundreds of millions more Africans are predicted to live in cities over the next three decades as the continent rapidly urbanises. Many of these new urban Africans, however, are likely to end up in informal settlements. Already an estimated 200 million Africans live in informal settlements - often without access to energy and sanitation.

The recently concluded 10th World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum emphasised the importance of the WSIS Action Lines as a key United Nations framework for progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. Round table participants also highlighted the need for sharing of scarce resources, as well as strengthening collaboration to build confidence and security in the use of technology for good and digital skills so more people can benefit.
